Hawkshead Cottages
Travelling from the South:
Leave the M6 motorway at Exit 36
[signposted Kendal and
South Lakes]. Travel along the A591 past Windermere to Ambleside.
As you enter Ambleside take the left fork at the traffic
lights [A593 signposted to Coniston] and travel alongside of the
lake for about a mile. Turn left [signposted to Coniston, Hawkshead
and Langdale] and continue for a further 50 yards then turn
left over the narrow bridge, still following the Coniston signs
- after about ¼ mile you reach the hamlet of Clappersgate.
[see below]
Travelling from the North:
Take the A593 from Ambleside
towards Coniston until you reach the hamlet of Clappersgate.
From Clappersgate: -
Turn left [B5286] and follow the signs towards Hawkshead.
After about 2 miles, turn right at the signpost
for Tarn Hows and Coniston, which has a little sign at its
foot pointing to the ‘Drunken Duck’.
After another ½ mile there is a
crossroads [the ‘Drunken Duck’ pub is on the right]. Go straight
across the crossroads and Borwick Fold is 1 mile further on. It is situated
on the right hand side of the road and has a sign outside.
The entrance to Borwick Fold can
only be approached from one direction, as the lane is narrow,
therefore continue past the entrance for 100 yards to a small,
grass, triangular road island, which enables you to turn around
and approach us from the opposite direction.
Directions avoiding Windermere &
Ambleside during busy weekends and school holidays when the
Windermere to Ambleside road can get rather congested.
Leaving the M6 motorway at junction
36 take the A590 towards Kendal, which is a duel carriage-way.
Turn left [ signposted to Barrow] and continue until you reach
Newby Bridge. At Newby Bridge carry on past the roundabouts
and turn right over a narrow bridge following the signs to Lakeside
and Hawkshead.
Continue on the B5285 [past Hawkshead] in the direction of Ambleside.
After about 3/4 a mile turn left up Hawkshead Hill [signposted
to Coniston]. Go up the hill until you reach a small hamlet
where the hill flattens out. You will see the Baptist Chapel on
your right. Turn right immediately after the Chapel. After you
pass the phone box [on your left] take the slip road to the
right. Turn right at the 'T' junction. Borwick Fold Cottages are
approximately 1/2 a mile from here, on the left shortly after
you come down a steep hill.
We wish you a safe journey....
